Mott Children's Health Center

Situation

The Mott Children's Health Center has one goal: providing comprehensive health services to Genesee County children. So when the air quality of their thirty-five year old building grew increasingly poor under the strain of the facility's original mechanical systems, Chief of Operations Gary Willis knew is was time for a change. "When little children are sitting in an exam room, we don't want them shivering or uncomfortable." said Gary. "They're already in an environment that's strange to them. My goal is to create an environment that's pleasant, clean and comfortable”. The ability to control a room's temperature and air quality is essential to our providing quality care. As a service provider to Mott Children's Center, ATI GROUP was already familiar with the challenge of maintaining air quality with the Center's original HVAC system. With Gary's concerns in mind, ATI evaluated every room for air exchange, resulting in a test and balance report that showed a fresh air ventilation rate of less than 5 cfm. Their findings confirmed what Gary suspected: despite the constant struggle to maintain the old mechanical system, air quality was at an unacceptable level. In April of 1997, Mott's building and grounds committee approved ATI GROUP proposal for a new system and the mechanical overhaul began as part of an entire building renovation.

The challenge was clear to replace Mott Children's Health Center's mechanical system without interfering with the Center's ability to deliver patient services. Working side-by-side with other contractors involved in the building renovation, ATI approached the project one room at a time.

"Keeping the Center operational was a priority." said Bill Jensen, partner of ATI GROUP. "Consequently, logistics and sensitivity to other renovation going on around us was essential to successfully managing the project. For instance, we might spend an entire day working in one room, ensuring that room was completely functional before moving on to another room."

Solution

As in the case with all renovation projects, ATI GROUP assigned a team of professionals to Mott Children's Health Center. Project Scope was first established by ATI's Design and Engineering group, led by Director of Engineering Services, Mike Wacyk. The Project and Construction Group was led by Bob Campbell, General Superintendent of Construction Services, who managed the construction process. Equally critical to the success of Mott's renovation was the Operations and Service Group led by Service Manager Debra Holleman and Service Superintendent Kim Sutherby. "Our team approach works," says partner Mike Bunting "because our people take ownership in what's happening on each job. They have a vested interest in each project and consequently this attitude is reflected in the quality of our work. Transitions from one department to another are smooth and seamless. Everyone here is equally concerned with whether or not we achieved desired results."

Today, ATI GROUP services Mott Children's Health Center's new mechanical system. With an ATI professional on-site three days per week, Mott is assured their new system will continue to operate like new, and Gary Willis continues to have access to ATI's project team, ensuring a continuity of service excellence. "ATI kept the building operational for the entire year and a half of the project," says Gary Willis "They prepared for contingencies ahead of time and their workmanship is top- notch. They have taken pride in making sure the service they provide meets our expectations."
